I don’t understand. How have they not found the ghosts yet? Why do we have to implement an island-wide curfew? Good tax dollars were spent hiring these people, and they haven’t made any kind of progress.

Chapter Eighteen

My alarm doesn’t wake me up the next morning, but rather the knocking of someone’s hand against my door. I’m halfway through a snore, completely disoriented. My face is planted on top of one of my textbooks, and my body is lying sideways across the bed. I can’t believe it. I fell asleep while doing homework. That’s a first. I push back the blanket covering my body—I don’t remember wrapping myself in it before dozing off. Did Cyrus do this?

“Melody?” Mom knocks again.

I rub my bleary eyes, yawning and trying to get accustomed to the world around me, but then I remember Cyrus is supposed to be here. And yet, she’s nowhere to be seen. Oh shit. My eyes scan the room. I check if the window’s open, thinking maybe she climbed out and escaped in the night, but the blinds remain shut. Slowly, my gut sinking lower, I approach my bedroom door, unlock it, and come face-to-face with my mother.

She looks more tired than she did yesterday, gray circles underlining her eyes. Yet despite her obvious exhaustion, it seems she’s been up for some time, because she’s wearing the gray coveralls she often wears on missions. She smiles at me gently, then grimaces at my disheveled mess of a bed.

“Sweetie,” she says in a tone of voice that’s both surprised and concerned. “Did you fall asleep doing homework?”

“Y-yeah.”

She frowns and places the back of her hand against my forehead to check for a fever. “You feeling okay? Simon told me you didn’t come out for dinner last night, and I was going to get you to eat something, but your bedroom light was off.”

“I’m fine. I didn’t feel hungry.”

I yawn again and check the time on my phone. It’s not glitching, so Cyrus probably isn’t inside. About fifteen minutes till my normal wake-up time. Huh. At least I didn’t oversleep.

“Your father and I are going on another stakeout tonight. We’ve asked Simon to join us, so you’ll be on your own. Call Simon if something happens, all right? He’s staying in the car and keeping an eye on things while we work.”

“I’m not going to call Simon,” I snap, and my nastiness surprises me.

Mom’s expression softens. “I know this change has been frustrating.”

“To say the least.”

“But he cares about you, and he’s trying. He was worried when you didn’t come out of your room last night. Said you were on the phone talking to someone.”

“On the phone—” Cyrus, idiot. My tone eases. “O-oh, yeah. I was talking with Tomai.”

“I’m glad you’re making friends.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m not asking you to be Simon’s best friend or anything, but please don’t shut him down if he asks you to eat something.”

“Why are you guys so obsessed with me
